Step Dance: Softshoe & Hardshoe Classes for Adults

with Ron Wallace

Step Dance (Hard Shoe/Cape Breton):
This percussive form of dance is one of the predecessors of American Tap dance. Originally from the West of Scotland, with the Highland Clearances this type of dance traveled to Nova Scotia (New Scotland), where it thrived and does today. Tap shoes are worn. Great old Scottish tunes are the backbone of the dances. Performance opportunities are available to those so inclined.

Step Dance (soft shoe):
Soft Shoe Step dance is a broad category of Scottish dance that includes many styles, danced by varying numbers and of all genders. In this class we practice the ancient alongside the modern. Fancy footwork, more than patterns of movement around the floor, defines Scottish step dance. These works range from soft and graceful to highly energetic! Performance opportunities are available to those so inclined.

New classes, including new beginners, begin the 2nd week of September 2025.
